Split was founded thanks to the Roman Emperor Diocletian who wished to make a palace in which he would spend the last years of his life. During 17 centuries the palace has become a city known after its history, tradition and its natural and cultural beauties. A walk through the old town brings the tourists back to the time of the old Rome because all the examples of the ancient architecture are still there – Peristyle, churches, palaces, Renaissance portals of the noblemen's houses, Baroque facades – merge with the modern architecture into a rich cultural heritage. Every tourist in Split has a feeling of being one of the local citizens and becomes a part of the city rhythm really quickly. Split offers something for everyone; you can enjoy the delicious homemade specialties, visit the theatre or some of the film festivals or you can party in various clubs. In recent years Split is especially known after the Ultra Europe Festival which attracts thousands of young visitors every year, from all over the world. Those of you who are tired of the city hustle can go to Marjan and enjoy the clean forest air or relax and workout at the jogging trail. Those who want to enjoy the sun and the sea can visit well known Bačvice beach.
