Lika is a plateau in the southwest of the central part of Croatia, surrounded with mountains – Mala Kapela in the north, Velika Kapela in the west, Plješevica in the east and Velebit in the south. Lika, just as the biggest part of the Ličko-senjska county, represents one large strategic and traffic center. State road D1 Zagreb – Split and state road Zagreb – Zadar, highway A1 Zagreb – Split – Ploče, and railway Zagreb – Knin – Split, all of them pass through Lika. About 50 000 inhabitants live at the area of Lika today and they mostly do farming and cattle breeding. The preservation of nature and environment is among the biggest qualities of Lika, so there are three national parks at this area, Plitvice Lakes, Paklenica and Sjeverni Velebit and one nature park, Velebit. These national parks and nature park certainly contribute to significant tourist development of Lika. The most tourists are attracted to Lika by natural phenomenon, National Park Plitvice Lakes. Sightseeing and tour around Plitvice Lakes can be done on foot, walking through the paths and wooden bridges or driving in a boat and tourist train. The most attractive part of the National park are Upper and Lower Lakes, which can be seen through two entrances. National Park is open for sightseeing all year round but swimming, hunting or fishing are not allowed in the Park. National Park has several big and small hotels, camp and bungalows for the accomodation of the visitors.
